The Song of the Water Spirits

Dear Friends,

This month's message came to me as I meditated with the Awareness on New Years Eve. I have come to believe deeply that there are ancient energies of earth and sky, fire and water awakening again in our world, that seek to bring greater balance and harmony. I have come to understand that it is not enough these days to pray to Spirit for help. Spirit needs our help. As we remember the presence of Spirit, as we heighten our Awareness and reconnect with these ancient energies, they can help, but they need us. So I offer this song to help us all remember and honor the presence of Spirit and its power. The song is beyond words; the words below are a translation.

Song of the Water Spirits

Imagine a river.
A river, space beyond time, a river blue beyond blue, copper and bronze, color of sky, color of burnished earth, a river amidst red rocks and hills or twilight mountains, a river bright in the green valleys, a river that glimmers silver with mist in the morning, shines gold with the sun. Reeds grow tall and translucent and shiver in the wind. On the shores, in the shallows, are women in white, women of light, wings of white, waves of light. They shimmer, and shiver, and sing. Imagine their song, high and clear, a single note, a single sound, the long "ah" of an exhaled breath, a drawn out sigh, song of stars and sky, water and earth, becoming and being, dream and vision, song beyond words. It calls you. Deep in your heart you have heard it always. You know the melody. You know the visions it brings. It calls you through the mist, beyond the sun, into the heart of all that is, or was, or will be. Peace beyond peace, home beyond home. They sing:

Don't be afraid. The ancient legends teach you to fear our song. Why? Because those who listen will cease to make war, cease to dominate and conquer. Oh men of the earth have shut their ears and banished us, driven us deep below the surface, far far away into the caverns. Under the rivers, under the hills we dwell. We are banished because those who hear our song rest content in themselves, pleased with this world, eager to grow and cultivate the fruits of this earth, to enjoy the infinite pleasures of the paradise they have been given. Those who hear our song can no longer seek to conquer, can no longer avenge and aggress, brandish their weapons and ride the winds of war. Those who sing our song can never again utter a harsh word. Oh men of earth you fear gentleness and love and peace and so you have banished us. You seek war and glory, victory and domination, riches and power. We weep for you, oh men of earth, and we sing still for you. Our song haunts your hearts, disturbs your sleep, whispers in your blood, and calls you from deep within. What a great sadness you carry now, oh men of earth, and all your medicines will not cure it, nor all your strategies and victories. We weep for you, and you rise in the morning with sadness, because deep in your heart you hear the rhythm of our song. You feel it in the flow of your innermost being, and you long for it. Peace. Love. Gentleness. Beauty. Pleasure. Wisdom. Oh men and women of earth, we call you to remember your heritage. Daughters of earth, awaken, remember, remember. The ancient song of the water spirit calls you home.

Go to a river. Go to the sea. Listen to the rain. Feel the water deep in the earth. Know the flowing of your blood. We are everywhere. Listen. Sing our song with us. Hear it in the rising river, the ebbing tide, the drought and flood. We return, we come, our song grows stronger once again.

Remember: one who hears our song will bring peace to this world. One who sings our song can speak only peace.

Remember: your voice was created to sing the song of wisdom, peace and love, to be the instrument of love. Your body was created to be an instrument of love. You are created to be the voice of love, the instrument through which the harmonies of love, peace, beauty and wisdom may be played.

May all beings be happy, peaceful and free of suffering.

In September I experienced the wonder of a water spirit healing ceremony with healer Augustine Kandemwa from Zimbabwe. Augustine came to Santa Fe with authors and healers Deena Metzger and Michael Ortiz-Hill. Deena's new book "Entering the Ghost River: Meditations on the Theory and Practice of Healing" contains many valuable insights. Her website is You can find out more about the work of Augustine and Michael and their book "A Gathering in the Names" at

In November I sat with seven women in Luxembourg by the river that flows through the city, and we reconnected with the ancient legend of Melusina, or Waterwoman. In next month's message I will tell the story of Melusina, with commentary from the Awareness on its significance for our world today. All over Europe, whether it is by the lake in Zurich or the Rhine in Cologne, I have felt the presence of the water spirits. Here in New Mexico as we experience drought and lack of water, I have felt the presence of those spirits, and the need to speak for them.

I am so grateful to have had these experiences and to share them with others. I dedicate the words of this song to peace in the world, and to calling forth and honoring the spirits of earth and water, fire and air, plant and animal, star and sky and rock. I dedicate the voicing of this song to each of you that reads it; may it help awaken your connection to Spirit, your inner knowing of the presence of Spirit, and the peace that knowledge brings.

With Love,
