The Labyrinth

The labyrinth is a metaphor for the self, one that was often constructed in ancient time, created in precise pattern, a maze that the initiate entered to experience the Great Mystery. As you made your way through the labyrinth you circled around and around and around until you came to the center, and in the center you found ....only yourself. The Great Mystery - You. The Self. The great mystery spoken of in the ancient times is the constant process of knowing the self. The great initiation is to know the self. Knowing the self is a continual journey, a spiral, with no final destination. The center is always there, it is the knowing itself. .

Many great sages have said the self and the universe are one; there is no difference between the inner and the outer. Many great sages have said that to truly know the self is to know the nature of everything, of the universe itself. Still people search for a way out of the labyrinth, the escape -how can I avoid having to be with myself, know myself, take are of myself, understand myself?

It is possible to feel lost in the labyrinth of the self, to wander down corridors that seem like deadends. So many hopes. so many fears, so many desires, so many experiences. One can spiral through them wondering, what is my true self? Who am I really? It is possible also to feel lost in the external world, to wonder: what is truth? What is of value? What is the meaning of it all? These questions about self and world and universe are the labyrinth. One's life is the labyrinth. One's body-mind-spirit is the labyrinth. One journeys though the labyrinth in the dark, feeling one's way, following the path that unfolds, not knowing, not being able to see the end.

Ancient prophets said that in these times now the oracles would no longer be able to see the future. People experience this. It becomes harder to hold to a plan, a course of action, to predict what people will do, what events will occur. The number of variables increase, the world becomes more complex, multi-dimensional. The twists and turns of the labyrinth are challenging.

Before falling asleep at night imagine that you have spent the day feeling your way through the labyrinth. You have reached the center. It is dark. Above you there is an opening to the night sky. You are in a round chamber, large, spacious, empty. You sit in the middle of this sphere of darkness, stars overhead. There is nowhere to go but back through the spiral once again. What have you learned in the labyrinth today? Each day you feel your way through the convolutions of your life. At the end of the day you take time to sit quietly, to breathe, to return to the center of yourself, to reflect on your journey. You sleep in dream and darkness. In the morning the sun rises, the cycle begins again, you spiral through another day. You find your way once again back to the center of yourself.

The labyrinth is an ancient mystery and a present experience. It is a metaphor, a great teacher and it is your life. Reflect on the labyrinth. Enter it. Enter yourself.
