Energy

This month the meditation comes from my book "You Are Energy: How to Access, Conserve and Use Your Energy Effectively." In the fullness of summer we can feel life energy all around us, in the sky and earth and trees and rivers, in the sun and rain. We can feel it our own breath, in the cells of our body. As we experience the wonderful gift of this energy, it is a good time also to honor it, appreciate it, and to be aware of the preciousness of this life energy. It's a good time to reflect on ways to conserve energy in the world, whether it's electricity, water, oil and gas, trees, our earth's atmosphere, or our own personal life energy. This meditation is intended to help you feel the precious gift of the life energy.

Begin by reflecting on the word "energy." Breathe it in, feel the word in you. What is energy? How do you experience it? Does the very word bring a flow of energy to you, or does it produce a feeling of fatigue and hopelessness? Just notice your responses. If you are used to feeling a lack of energy, you may feel frustrated as soon as you think about it. If this is so, it's important to shift your association with the word, the idea, of energy. Let yourself breathe in the possibility that you can experience more energy.

Sit down quietly, take a breath, and meditate for a few moments, following your breath. Imagine that with each breath, energy is coming into you, flowing through your body.

Use your imagination. As you breathe in the life force energy, imagine all that is going on in your body at this very moment. Your heart is beating, the blood is flowing and pulsing. Nerve cells are transmitting impulses, cells are dividing and dying. Food is digesting. Glands are secreting. Countless processes are occurring simultaneously within you as you sit here quietly breathing, reading these words.

Now, after reading what follows, close your eyes and imagine you can feel all that energy within you. Think of how much energy there is working away at this moment. Appreciate it: the energy of the blood, the cells, the heart, the liver, the brain. Even if every part of the body isn't working optimally, you are still a vast storehouse of energy. Don't concentrate on what isn't there. Feel how much energy you have to have, simply to be here, alive, breathing, reading this.

Allow the thought, "I am a vast storehouse of energy" to linger and reverberate in your mind. Further excerpts from the book are available on the "Basic Meditations" page.
