The Vibrant Life
Simple Meditations to Use Your Energy Effectively
Donna's Workshops and Summer Travel Schedule
Spring is the time of poetry and song. For your reflection, I offer you a selection of haiku by Zen poet Ryokan. In the midst of drought, war, famine, peace, abundance, joy, sorrow, spring returns.
First, Ryokan's haiku, then my own spring poem, and then I invite you to your own. Is there a poem in you this spring dawn or day, twilight or night, that wants to be spoken, written down, shared?
It's a time-honored tradition to make a poem for spring!
Blessings for a springtime of rebirth and renewal.
With love, Donna
RYOKAN'S SPRING POEMS
The spring birds have all returned
and their song drifts from every tree-
Let's have another cup of sakè.
Tonight the plum trees reflect the silver moon;
both are in full bloom.
Entranced, I did not return home until evening.
How can we ever lose interest in life?
Spring has come again
And cherry trees bloom in the mountains.
In my bowl
violets and dandelions are mixed
Together with the Buddhas of the Three worlds.
Beneath the willows, singing and laughing
with my friends; this fine spring day
Is truly full of joy.
(Quoted from One Robe, One Bowl, The Zen Poetry of Ryokan, translated and introduced by John Stevens, Weatherhill, New York and Tokyo, 1977).
DONNA'S SPRING POEM
no water in the stream
no clouds in the sky,
just the faint scent of far-off rain that never reaches ground.
Relentless blue radiance day after day
teaches the lesson of the drought:
love what comes
be tender and careful
with what is.
YOUR SPRING POEM
May all beings be happy, peaceful and free of suffering.
